Abstract

MERCHAN H, César. INCIDENCIA DE LA INFLACIÓN SOBRE LA DISTRIBUCIÓN DEL INGRESO: EL CASO COLOMBIANO. Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2002, vol.21, n.37, pp.81-108. ISSN 0121-4772.

This paper tries to assess, for the Colombian case, if inflation raises income inequality by damaging the poorest people. With the help of the lagged wages and debtor-creditor theories, among other, as well as empirical works at international level, it shows the ways inflation affects income distribution. It finds that inflation does not necessarily affect the poorest people and, on the contrary, inflation may be progressive as it has happened in other countries. In Colombia, the empirical evidence shows that inflation has been not regressive because there was an inertial inflation very fixed for a long period, without getting hyperinflation levels as in other Latin-American economies.

Keywords : income; income distribution; inflation.
