Abstract

SINISTERRA PAZ, Guillermo A. UNA MEDICIÓN DE LA POBREZA: UN ENFOQUE COMPLEMENTARIO PARA EL CASO COLOMBIANO. Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2003, vol.22, n.38, pp.127-150. ISSN 0121-4772.

The sociological perspective of relative deprivation is becoming more accepted in the literature about poverty, understood as being people´s feelings of frustration within a society on not having access to opportunities which are viable for and available to others. Several models have been structured from this viewpoint seeking to measure such definition of poverty within the framework of economic theory. This article tries to provide a complementary way of calculating poverty in Colombia by using the concept of relative deprivation, which is richer in information than those normally used. This leads to a better diagnosis of who is or is not poor. These approaches have been used more frequently in developed countries. An econometric approach has been used to define poverty based on the cross-section analysis technique.

Keywords : relative poverty; social exclusion; relative deprivation.
