This article analyses the field of economics (particularly the influence of north- american academic thinking on educating economists) and the consolidation of standard economic theory´s domination of the field. Together these have contributed towards de-legitimising scientific currents different to neo-classical theory in which the excessive formalisation and use of mathematics has played a determinant role.
