Abstract

VARGAS YARA, Gustavo. ¿ES EQUITATIVO EL GASTO SOCIAL EN SALUD? . Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2004, vol.23, n.41, pp.171-193. ISSN 0121-4772.

This article analyses the fairness of public spending on health using information contained in the National Household Survey, March 2000. It was found that important advances had been made in terms of health insurance and the distribution of financial assistance within the subsidised regime during the seven years following the passing of Law 100/1993. Nevertheless, some concerns are presented regarding focalising services and the demand for them. The impact of health subsidies on household income is also measured by using the redistributive effect; such calculation shows an important though limited result.

Keywords : health; equity; subsidised regime; asymmetry of information; redistributive effect.
