This work develops a method to compare the energy expenses between sequential (reactionseparation) and simultaneous (reactive distillation) configurations, analyzing the internal and external process fows. As example was used the reaction of the type: A + B ⇄ C + D; with saturation temperatures : T_C ^σ < T_A ^σ < T_B ^σ < T_D ^σ. The results are discussed based on the residual curves for the industrial case of trans-esterification of methyl acetate with propyl formiate to obtain propyl acetate and methyl formiate.
