Prohibition in the USA between 1920 and 1933 stimulated smuggling liquor from various countries, including CubaHavana became a destination for North-american tourism, not just for its geographical position, but also for its urban development, rapid economic growth, Cuba's riches, the country's cosmopolitan nature added to the vitality of international migratory currents and the development of communications between the island and the USA. Smuggling liquor from Cuba became part of a socially-accepted tradition of trafficking in various goods existing since the time of the colony. Smuggling illegal immigrants and narcotics during the 1920s and 1930s was added to smuggling liquor.
