Emotional intelligence (EI) is a controversial term. Hundreds of manuals, books and magazines have been written due to its importance but few scientific have been able to ascertain its beneficial effects to date.This paper offers a scientific view of the concept by studying intelligence, the origin of construct call EI and its corresponding evaluation models.Documentary investigation was employed when preparing this work; this led to locating, selecting and collecting suitable material. The main authors giving rise to this topic (and their corresponding research) were located by reviewing the sources. The main models for evaluating EI which have been used in different areas of knowledge are reviewed. The rigorous implications derived from studying EI today are then delineated
