Abstract

DONOSO DIAZ, Sebastián. Economic policy involved in financing university studies in Chile (1980-2010): the debate regarding its principles. Innovar [online]. 2009, vol.19, suppl.1, pp.141-155. ISSN 0121-5051.

The text reflects on the principles ruling the system for financing university studies in Chile from a political economy of education point of view. Such case is relevant because financing policy assuming that costs will be shared amongst society, the family and educational institutions has been applied during the last three decades, as has using different student credit systems. Discussion continues concerning the rationale of political economics, analysing the production of goods in education, identifying the main educational demand and the principles in play, taking account of pending topics and some of their consequences. Some proposals are thus made which are orientated towards mitigating them. Preoccupation is expressed regarding revealing a problem which has still not been visualised regarding the resources invested to date and the return on them which could mean a crisis of proportions, such as Chile faced regarding secondary education in 2002.

Keywords : political economy of education; financing university studies; instruments for financing students; Chilean higher education.
