Abstract

GUZMAN, Isidoro  and  MONTOYA, José Luis. Technical Efficiency and Productive Change in the Spanish Wide Gauge Railroad Sector (1910-1922). Innovar [online]. 2011, vol.21, n.40, pp.219-234. ISSN 0121-5051.

This work looks at the performance of the broad gauge Spanish railroad sector by studying a sample of railroad companies during the period from 1910-1922, which at that time represented practically 97% of the national rail network. Using the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) methodology, the levels of efficiency and productive change were obtained along with an analysis of the reasons for their variation. The results lead to the conclusion that the average productivity increase during the period analyzed reached 1.6% per year, which, along with the different distribution of that change according to the diverse geographical regions in which the companies operated, could explain some of the corporate movements that occurred just a few years later.

Keywords : railroad; efficiency; productive; Data Envelopment Analysis; Malmquist index.
