Abstract

MARIN-IDARRAGA, Diego Armando. Epistemological Considerations Regarding The Scientific Character of Management. Innovar [online]. 2012, vol.22, n.46, pp.39-52. ISSN 0121-5051.

Starting from the assumption that management faces an epistemic gap due to rhetorical conceptions that have been created regarding its purpose and method, this article reflects upon its scientific statute. The intention is to historically place the strengthening of the science in the realm of modernity and re-examine the adversary debate between the natural and social sciences, as a point of reference to examine a taxonomic possibility for management, which, along with considerations about the purpose of study and the method for assessing knowledge, would provide an analytical framework for its epistemological conception. The theoretical arguments addressed propose that management may well be framed within the field of the social sciences, but because of certain epistemic deficiencies in its method and purpose, its scientific categorization is still premature, thus leaving open its assessment as a discipline of a scientific nature along with its factual character, which by its very nature involves understanding collective business action.

Keywords : epistemology in management; science in management; objective and method in management.
