Abstract

BARRIOS HERNANDEZ, Dursun  and  OLIVERA ANGEL, Martha. Analysis of Competitiveness of the Dairy Sector: A Case Applied to Northern Antioquia Department in Colombia. Innovar [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.48, pp.33-42. ISSN 0121-5051.

The purpose of this research is to contribute to words a description of the current competitiveness of specialized milk production systems. After reviewing the literature associated with the characterization of livestock production systems and the analysis of costs and competitiveness, a descriptive study was carried out that included 138 farms and 5,952 cows in six municipalities located in the basin of the northern high plateau of the Department of Antioquia. In this manner, the average sale price received by producers was determined, along with the unit production cost and the current status of the hygienic-sanitary quality of the milk. The cost structure and productive behavior of the system was also established according to location, technological level and size of the herd. The results of the research show how, by using indicators for cost, profit margins and profitability, conclusions can be reached regarding the efficiency with which the targeted productive systems are operating. In this manner, it can be inferred that knowledge of the degree of competitiveness of the above mentioned systems can become a tool for future research while also facilitating administrative decision-making with the aim of improving the productive performance of this industry.
