This article presents the incentives and constraints that management research faces in Colombia based on general considerations of the country, such as: science and technology policies, quality considerations imposed by the Ministry of National Education on degree curricula, and the conditions towards strengthening research provided by universities and management schools in the country. The empirical work was developed with school researchers and deans through an online survey in which 194 researchers (response rate 30.6%) and 63 deans or program directors participated(response rate 27.7%), additionally, a purposive sample of 25 researchers and 11 deans was selected for depth interviews; there were three focus groups. The main findings are evident: resources for research, economic incentives for researchers, science and technology policy, the scientific community, ways of dissemination of research results, and the administrative aspects. These points are being analyzed as institutional policies by universities to encourage research. No doubt, any efforts that focus on minimizing the restrictors, will promote the development of this emerging academic community.
