Abstract: He aim of this article is to present the organizational and environmnetal factors that stand in the way of cooperation and interaction between different actors involved in Local Production Systems (LPSs) involving Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). An exploratory study was conducted in a nascent LPS in the agricultural machinery and implements sector in the west of Paraná state, Brazil. An analysis of the cooperation and interaction relations between the firms in the SLP identified the inhibiting factors and linked them to the specificities of the firms examined. Empirical evidence demonstrated that the most important of these factors are organizational and strongly related to aspects associated with company size.

Keywords : Local production system; specificities of small and medium enterprises; cooperation; interaction; inhibiting factors.
