Abstract: Cooperation agreements in the export sector have been described in the literature as instruments that offer significant advantages to small and medium enterprises seeking to develop international activities. However, on many occasions such agreements do not seem to result in the notable advantages predicted by theory. The research investigates the ways in which partners' time orientation determines the peformance of the cooperation relationship by influencing levels of commitment and the governance structures that are adopted. The research hypotheses are tested using a sample of 70 export consortiums made up of Spanish firms which are structured under a joint venture model. The results show that time orientation exerts significant influence on partner decisions concerning long-term investments in the joint project and on the governance structures that are adopted, resulting in a tendency to favor relational structures. Both elements contribute to increased performance of the joint ventures studied.
