Abstract

HILLEN, Cristina  and  LAVARDA, Carlos Eduardo Facin. INTERGENERAL SUCCESSION AND INNOVATION IN FAMILY BUSINESSES: A LITERATURE REVIEW. Innovar [online]. 2020, vol.30, n.77, pp.11-24.  Epub Nov 20, 2020. ISSN 0121-5051.  https://doi.org/10.15446/innovar.v30n77.87426.

Intergenerational succession is among the characteristics that differentiate family businesses from non-family firms. This feature poses a great need for innovation in order to ensure the continuity of this type of organizations. The goal of this study is to map-out the scientific production on innovation and the intergenerational succession of family businesses. Through a review of the available literature in Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases, four peer-reviewed papers on the subject were chosen based on the terms "innovat", "succession" and "family" in the fields "title", "abstract" and "keywords." The search covered the scientific production published in English until February 2018. As a result, we identified the lack of a comprehensive vision of intergenerational succession and innovation in family businesses in the literature. The main conclusion of this study is that the succession process could be positively or negatively associated with innovation, depending on contextual factors and family participation. Based on the triangulation of the selected studies, we present some suggestions for future research on the field.

Keywords : Family business; innovation; intergenerational succession; literature.
