GHOTME, Rafat; LEGUIZAMON, Jesica  e  GARZON, Ingrid. Drug Trafficking in Mexico. A New Direction in Foreign Policy? (2003-2012). Estud. Polit. [online]. 2013, n.43, pp.136-155. ISSN 0121-5167.

This article examines how Mexico has had to face drug trafficking as a transnational phenomenon and at the same time how it has been under pressure from the high demand for drugs in the United States. The research refers to neoclassical realism, arguing that due to asymetrical power relationships with the United States and the weak conditions around Mexico in general, drug trafficking has been faced with a militaristic and interventionist perspective, which has then has undermined the principles of Mexican foreign policy -preservation of sovereignty, promoting cooperation and defense of human rights-.
