GHOTME GHOTME, Rafat Ahmed; GARZON GARZON, Ingrid Viviana  e  CIFUENTES ORTIZ, Paola Andrea. The International Relations of Syrian Civil War from a Regional Approach: Hegemony and Balance in the Middle East. Estud. Polit. [online]. 2015, n.46, pp.13-32. ISSN 0121-5167.

The aim of this article is to analyze the regional dimension of the Syrian civil war, taking into consideration the interests of key Middle Eastern states involved. Despite finding factors related to identity or ideology, both individual states and the different blocks, act to preserve or expand their power and interests. This logic is consistent with the realist theory of international relations and serves as a tool to address, through the situational analysis method, the behavior of state and non-state actors in the Syrian civil war as an attempt to contain the threats to its security in an anarchic environment and a competitive and unstable regional system, leaving aside moral considerations. While some may be looking to become regional leaders such as Saudi Arabia or Turkey, another group of actors, such as Iran and Hezbollah are determined to maintain a minimum balance. He Syrian civil war is key in retaining or expanding the aspirations of neighboring States.

Palavras-chave : Civil War; Regional Balance of Power; Hegemony; Interests; Syria.
