Abstract

GONZALEZ GIL, Adriana. From Forced Internal Displacement in Colombia to Cross-Border Migration to Ecuador. Estud. Polit. [online]. 2015, n.47, pp.177-197. ISSN 0121-5167.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.espo.n47a11.

The dynamic of the Colombian conflict and its internationalization process show significant changes in the modalities of forced displacement. A significant and sustained growth in the number of displaced people seeking refuge in the Colombian borders with Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela since late 90's showed another dimension of the problem. It showed cross-border mobility under forced conditions and forced migration as a new category of analysis that calls into question the criteria which usually interpreted migration as the result of a voluntary decision -commonly associated with economic motives. In this case, forced migration and the passage from the category of displaced person to refugee ask for a renewal of the questions on a research field as dynamic as international migration, and also to overcome the dichotomy between voluntary and forced immigration in contexts affected by new global labor conflicts in order to reveal the conditions that explain the institutional and social responses to the migration process.

Keywords : Forced Displacement; Forced Cross-Border Migration; Armed Conflict; Colombia; Ecuador.
