Abstract

MERENSON, Silvina. The Uruguayan Frente Amplio in Argentina and the "voto Buquebus". Citizenship and Transnational Political Practices in the Southern Cone. Estud. Polit. [online]. 2016, n.48, pp.115-134. ISSN 0121-5167.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.espo.n48a07.

Using a multi-sited ethnography focused on the organized Uruguayan community in Argentina, this article makes a literature review on transnational political practices of South-North migration routes in order to identify some topics that, from the perspective of the actors, hinder the dynamics in the Southern Cone. An empirical case study, which summarizes the history of the Uruguayan Broad Front Party (Frente Amplio) in Argentina and the historical development of what is called "voto Buquebus", will be analyzed in order to put the literature review to the test. This case shows the movement of people, capital and votes from Argentina to Uruguay to participate in the Uruguayan elections. The article suggests a series of analytical challenges that could contribute to the complexity of existent analyses of the political practices and the exercise of transnational citizenship.
