This article analyzes the faces of statehood in the northeastern and northwestern areas of Medellín, based on the disputes over order and control between 1987 and 1995. The research was based on an ethnographic and memory-construction methodology, to understand the relationships between citizens and the State in a city context marked by the effects of different types of violence. For this, a theoretical framework based on relational sociology was built. The article problematizes the diagnoses made about the crisis in Medellín in order to propose that the relations between the State and society are based on a deployment of mechanisms and effects that generate diverse and daily ways of exercising power over a territory, a population, and some resources, which do not necessarily imply conflict.
