COY VELANDIA, LUZ STELLA et al. HEMATOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BLOOD DONORS IN BOGOTÁ,D.C., COLOMBIA (2.600 M). rev.fac.med [online]. 2007, vol.15, n.1, pp.40-47. ISSN 0121-5256.
Identifying iron depletion in the population living at a moderate altitude is difficult because of the additional erythropoietic enhance generated by hypobaric hypoxia. The object of this research was to hematological describe a healthy population, natives and/or residents of Bogotá (2.600m) through primary hematological tests that are actually being considered to evaluate iron depletion status. The lab tests included the hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), serum ferritine (FS), soluble serum transferrin receptor (sTfR), and (sTfR-FS Index). The studied population consisted of 32 men and 27 women, blood donors of the Hemocentro Distrital. Although the Hb, Hct, and Fs were high, the sTfR-FS Index detected that 29% had iron depletion in phase I, 59% in phase II and only 12% had the right amount of iron. There was a positive correlation between FS and Hb but not between the sTfR-FS Index and Hb
