Abstract

GONZALES, GUSTAVO F  and  TAPIA, VILMA. HEMOGLOBIN, HEMATOCRIT AND HIGH ALTITUDE ACCLIMATIZATION: RELATIONSHIP TO HORMONAL CHANGES AND MULTIGENERATIONAL RESIDENCE. rev.fac.med [online]. 2007, vol.15, n.1, pp.80-93. ISSN 0121-5256.

In the present review it is evaluated the relation between the variation on hematocrit with age associated with hormonal changes at high altitude, in this particular case the region of el Cerro de Pasco located at 4.340 meters above sea level. We also evaluate the multigenerational life time of the residents of this populations with respect to theirs adaptation to this environment. We evaluated different criteria to define anemia in pregnant women at this height and the implications on the gestational analysis on newborns with elevated levels of hemoglobin
