AGUILAR QUINTERO, Allison y CARDOSO PACHON, Sebastián. Bacillus thuringiensis and L. sphaericus as Biocontrollers of A. aegypti and A. albopictus; Dengue and Yellow Fever Virus Vectors. Rev. Med [online]. 2023, vol.31, n.1, pp.117-140. Epub 29-Dic-2023. ISSN 0121-5256. https://doi.org/10.18359/rmed.6738.
Dengue and yellow fever currently represent a health problem in tropical countries, where the population is expected to adopt measures to avoid being affected by vectors of these diseases. Unfortunately, more than 700.000 deaths from viral infections of this type have been registered. This study evaluates the effectiveness of eradicating these indices through different methods, such as chemical or biological. However, it is found that chemical control does not demonstrate 100 % effectiveness, since mosquitoes can generate resistance to pesticides, added to the damage to the environment caused by them. On the contrary, in biological control we find the biocontrollers Bacillus thuringiensis and L. sphaericus; these two acts through toxins, causing the death of the vectors Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, without causing harm to the environment. In Colombia, due to the high rates of these diseases in tropical areas, mosquito eradication has been proposed through public health education, vector control, early detection, adequate treatment and epidemiological surveillance.
