This article analyzes the persistent divorce between clinical practice and research in psychotherapy, examining the underlying reasons in both contexts. With respect to clinical practice, the article discusses the characteristics of the teaching of psychotherapy, therapeutic schools as communities, and the fear of research. in the case of research in psychotherapy, the article analyzes research results regarding the effectiveness of psychotherapy, the therapeutic alliance, and the elements of the process. Finally, it presents some of the transformations in research and its dissemination, which can contribute to closing the gap between practice and science in psychotherapy.
