Abstract

FERNANDES DE ARAUJO, LUDGLEYDSÜN; DE CARVALHO LOBO, CAMILA JOYCE; DE OLIVEIRA SANTOS, JOSÉ VICTOR  and  CORDEIRO SAMPAIO, ALICE VITORIA. Psychosocial Perceptions of Persons with HIV about Knowledge of AIDS. Rev. colomb. psicol. [online]. 2017, vol.26, n.2, pp.219-230. ISSN 0121-5469.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcp.v26n2.59349.

The principle aim of this study was to identify the psychosocial perception towards AIDS held by persons with HIV. The sample was composed of 44 persons of both sexes between the ages of 23 and 67 who carried the virus and were being monitored by the Testing and Advisory Center (CTA, acronym in Portuguese). We collected data using a sociodemo-graphic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. In general, the results indicated that these persons regard AIDS as a contagious disease, without cure and giving rise to many prejudices. Similarly, they see that the level of knowledge of AIDS is ambivalent.

Keywords : social perception; AIDS; sexually transmitted disease; prejudice.
