Abstract

ILLERA CAJIAO, Jorge Andrés  and  BUCHELY, Lina Fernanda. Switching Parties in Democracy: Economic Analysis of Law on the Rules Regarding Changes of Political Affiliation in Colombia (2003-2011). colomb.int. [online]. 2015, n.85, pp.15-52. ISSN 0121-5612.  https://doi.org/10.7440/colombiaint85.2015.01.

The article presents an economic analysis of the rules regulating changes of political party affiliation in Colombia. In developing a basic analysis of incentives, the authors conclude that double electoral militancy is a direct, predictable result of the present legal framework in which the rules are unable to deter party-switching behavior among actors in the political system. The result is a democratic game that, given the ever-increasing distrust of the institutions, gradually turns to other scenarios of democratic action such as judicial activism and social movements.

Keywords : Changes of political party affiliation; double militancy; economic analysis of law; party system; democracy; Colombia.
