Abstract

PEREZ, María Emilia et al. Green Chemistry as a Source of Novel Compounds for Agricultural Pest Control. Ciencia en Desarrollo [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.2, pp.83-91. ISSN 0121-7488.

Massive use of synthetic pesticides in modern agriculture has triggered a number of environmental problems that began to exhibit in 1960 and worsened over time. Poisoning of farm workers, presence of pesticide residues in food and its persistence in the environment, breakdown of natural biological control mechanisms and development of resistance in pest populations are some of the effects of pesticides that threaten human health and environment. In recent decades, various environmental regulations have banned or limited the use of many of these products, stimulating the search for new compounds selective and compatible with the environment and low toxicity to man. In this context we present the principles of green chemistry, a way of doing chemistry based on sustainability, aimed to develop methods and processes that prevent the generation of waste instead of making further treatment thereof. This work addresses and discusses the twelve principles exemplified in the field of pest control

Keywords : Pest; Pesticides; Green chemistry; Sustainability.
