The aim of this article is to show that some categories used in the political analysis prevent us from understand the relationships between political violence, State formation and regional policies in Colombia. The article debates some thought habits about the State and shows that the state-society dichotomy does not help us to understand the political violence facts. It also emphasizes the necessity of knowing the categories’ "biography" in order to overcome some state-centered visions of politics and to understand some regional groups’ political experience.
