Abstract

ARCOS-PALMA, Ricardo. Orlan: the body, a place of public discussion. Nómadas [online]. 2013, n.38, pp.205-216. ISSN 0121-7550.

The work of the French artist ORLAN is analyzed from an esthetic-philosophic point of view, in order to explain existence as a work of art, where piece and life are permeated by the public. ORLAN has insisted in the abolishment or surpassing of the gender, ethnographic, cultural, historical and technical frontiers. Various thoughts arise from her work, where concepts like hybridization, refiguration and transformation allows us to critically question identity. Finally, this article assesses the importance of her work in the public debate around technology, popular culture and gender.

Keywords : ORLAN; body; hybridization; performance; contemporary art; surgical procedures.
