Abstract

LEMOINE, Lizette  and  SALAZAR, Jaime Andrés. Oh Petronita, live is worth it!: portrayal of folksinger Petrona Martínez. Nómadas [online]. 2013, n.39, pp.217-228. ISSN 0121-7550.

This biographical exercise focuses on the art of "cantaora" Petrona Martínez, "La reina del bullerengue". The artist is connected with the African-Colombian musical tradition of the Atlantic coast, and her singing is presented as an exclusively feminine one within Colombian folk music tradition. Based on the account of the meeting between artist and author, the text asks who is Petrona Martínez?, what do we know about her?, what do we think about her?, What do we want to see in her?. It closes with some biographical notes inspired by the words and songs of the cantaora.

Keywords : Petrona Martínez; music; tradition; bullerengue; folksinger; artist.
