In Colombia Nursing has been ruled by Law 266, 1996 and law 911 October 6th 2004; training in such a field does demand the fulfillment of certain quality standards established by decree 2772, 2003. In response to all these requirements and the changes adopted by the new Health System, The Colombian Association of Nursing Faculties and Schools (ACOFAEN) decided to carry out a simultaneous research involving the 28 nursing programs throughout the country. The research followed a quantitative approach of the empirical-analytical and correlative type seeking to establish the relationship between the professional performance of the graduates from 1995 to 2004 and the current context of our health system and their formation profile; several research techniques were implemented such as individual interviews with the graduates, a survey for the employers, and a self-analysis guide of the formation profile for the curricular program. This article particularly describes the nursing program of the Universidad de Caldas whose sample was of 140 graduates, 45 employers and immediate bosses; the data analysis was made using Spand-wind and Atlas ti. The research showed interesting results regarding the sociological and demographical features, salaries, work conditions, the coherence between the formation profile, the performance profile, and the postgraduate background of the professionals. The main objective of this research was to provide the health and education areas with the necessary tools to make better decisions, the establishment of policies regarding health services and the formation of human resources in the field of nursing, besides it will help the curriculum teams adjust their syllabus and programs based on the competences and priorities of the current professional context, promote new majoring areas, and propose ongoing training for their graduates.
