Abstract

PIEDRAHITA S, Laura Elvira; PAZ, Karla Mayerling  and  ROMERO, Ana Maritza. INTERVENTION STRATEGY FOR THE PREVENTION OF SUICIDE IN ADOLESCENTS: THE SCHOOL AS CONTEXT. Hacia promoc. Salud [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.2, pp.136-148. ISSN 0121-7577.

Objectives: The educational intervention project whose objective was to promote protective behaviors from the risk factors for attempting suicide identified in adolescents and to promote knowledge of risk factors and provide them with tools for the initial approach to educators and parents. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 30 students between 9 and 14 years old, enrolled in an educational institution in the city of Cali between September 2009 and June 2010, and seven adults between educators and parents. The intervention was designed in four phases: An initial phase sought to identify risk factors in the students. During the second phase, the educational program was developed. In the third phase the program was implemented under the principles of health education. And a fourth phase, which the impact of the activities carried out, was evaluated. Results: The findings showed the lack of awareness adults have about suicide. From the results after the educational intervention, more accuracy in regards to the basic concepts of suicide and of the interventions to be performed with adolescents at risk was evident. Conclusions: The educational intervention allowed the identification of risk factors in adolescents and showed a significant effectiveness increading parents and educators' level of knowledge. Greater information enables the identification and timely treatment which leads to the decrease of the event in this population. It highlights the role of the school as appropriate context for the implementation of interventions.
