Abstract

In this review we made notes of how the Unit of Rheumatology in the faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogota, was born in 1966. It was the first of its kind in the country in grant, since it's first graduating residents, the degree of the specialty in Rheumatology. The actors, both teacher and it's of the time, influenced significantly the development of this subspecialty of the Internal Medicine in area of the social security; they made advanced studies and research and the results were presented in different national and international events. With the collection of the mimeographed material the "Bible of Colombian Rheumatology" was elaborated at the end of the sixties. We chronologically listed the beginning of the outpatient services and then the creation of Units of Rheumatology in several Social Security institutions of the time. The scientific works that were exposed in specialized forums, national and international events, as well as their participation in congress, symposiums and courses on the subspecialty in the Andean region, are also mentioned. To aid rheumatic patients, a permanent concern of rheumatologist, the Foundation Institute of Rheumatology and Immunology was created in the seventies, with the participation of medical professionals and other important personalities.
