This paper, result of Histal research group's joint work, aims to underline the importance of considering translation as one of the mechanisms for the spreading of ideas of the independence movement, as well as to show that the study of translation, from a historic perspective, contributes to clarify and even correct history itself. This is done through the study of several notorious cases in Venezuelan history. The editorial and translational work of Francisco de Miranda, García de la Serna's translations of Paine and M'Cullogh and the translation of the Carmagnole are mentioned. In greater detail, the translation of the independence movement press is also analyzed, based on six newspapers published between 1808 and 1822, and the contribution of translation to history is explored through various cases in which the interpretation of historic facts is corrected.
