Abstract

PERRUPATO, Sebastián. Ancient and modern in the Spanish university in the second half of XVIII century. Advances in the secularization of university reform plan developed by Gregorio Mayans y Siscar (1767)). Hist. Soc. [online]. 2014, n.27, pp.165-183. ISSN 0121-8417.  https://doi.org/10.15446/hys.n27.44648.

During the reign of Carlos III a series of reforms aimed at modernizing society take place. In this context, the reform of the university was a major concern. However, the dominance of scholastics within university faculties made the intrusion of the crown in the upper houses of learning a difficult undertaking. The aim of this study is to analyze these processes from the reform plan drafted in 1767 by Gregorio Mayans y Siscar. We understand that this is situated within a much broader context of reforms in which the tension between old and new is revealed around Spanish universities. The proposed reform of the Valencian revealed in its multiple dimensions (fields of study, methodology and readings), a progressive trend toward secularization, paving the way for new ideas to deepen reform in this area.
