Abstract

CARRENO-TARAZONA, Clara Inés. Methodological Aspects for a Comparative Study: Material Culture and Notarial Archives in Brazil and Colombia. Hist. Soc. [online]. 2019, n.36, pp.219-242.  Epub May 17, 2019. ISSN 0121-8417.  https://doi.org/10.15446/hys.n36.73900.

This article aims to answer the question about the importance of the comparative method to study the economic-material life found in the notarial archives of Brazil and Colombia. From the concept of material culture and the application of the comparative method to the notarial records of the historical archives of Franca-Brazil and Bucaramanga-Colombia, it was proposed to problematize the way in which the production of notarial instruments allowed the materialization of certain daily economic activities, being able to identify important relationships and interests between two groups of families and their local and regional businesses, in the development of the two countries during the second half of the 19th century. The results of the confrontation of these sources are a useful contribution to promote the importance of comparative studies with other regions in the context of the reconstruction of a global history.

Keywords : (Thesaurus) methodology; Brazil; Colombia. (Author) Notarial archive; comparative history; material culture.
