Abstract

GALAN MARTINEZ, Rodrigo Edmundo. The citizen control of the politicians and accountability. Rev. Derecho [online]. 2015, n.43, pp.293-321. ISSN 0121-8697.  https://doi.org/10.14482/dere.43.6149.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the importance of the political dimension of vertical accountability. To do this, the author explains how the principle of independence of the representatives has generated an excessive distance between them and the citizens. The author also discusses how the quality of representation limits the performance of representatives. To monitor the quality of the performance of representatives, citizens must have different mechanisms of accountability. The paper aims to show that vertical mechanisms of accountability are necessary for citizens to judge directly the performance of the representatives.

Keywords : political representation; principle of independence; accountability; responsibility; quality of representation.
