This paper attempts to answer a question about the relevance on society participation in political and social affairs in Spain. The current economic and system crisis has led to rethink about democratic tools and one of them is abrogation referendum. The inclusion in the Constitution of this instrument of direct democracy is not easy but necessary. Throughout this brief investigation it has been necessary to understand the meaning of abrogative referendum in modern society and also identify new elements that may be applicable to the Spanish constitutional system.
