Abstract
CASTRO-RODRIGUEZ, J. Alejandro; OROZCO-HERNANDEZ, Juan P and MARIN-MEDINA, Daniel S. Consumption and Drugs prescription potentially dangerous in elderly people. Revista médica Risaralda [online]. 2015, vol.21, n.2, pp.52-57. ISSN 0122-0667.
The prescription of drugs in elderly patients is and has been complex due to the influence of the physiological age changes in their metabolism, the selection bias of various clinical trials exclude older patients, the largest number of comorbidities and increased risk of toxicity and drug interactions. Thus, elderly patients have been targets of polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing of drugs, and as a result, poor adherence to treatment regimens, impaired quality of life, prescription cascade and generally higher morbidity and mortality. For this reason, tools have been designed for the classification of inappropriate prescriptions seeking to give medical support for the proper pharmacological management of these patients, of these, the Beers criteria and STOP-START criteria have been the most used.
