Abstract

RENTERIA-RESTREPO, Jorge Luis. Faith in Peace. Faith, Spirituality and Social representations of Peace of social educators in Cali, Colombia. Prospectiva [online]. 2019, n.28, pp.227-252. ISSN 0122-1213.  https://doi.org/10.25100/prts.v0i28.8032.

Cali is not only recognized for its Salsa dancing, statistics regarding violence have ranked it as one of the most violent cities in the world. Thinking of a change demands the understanding of the different factors that affect the formula of peace. An educator is one of the most important elements when it comes to identifying the route that is being taken to propose changes to the new generations. In this research study, by comparing two important socio-educational experiences (in a secular public institution and in a religious foundation), peace was studied through the theory of social representations and the study of values focused on spirituality and religious faith that underlies discourse. A qualitative study with a descriptive nature allowed us to divide and organize the thinking of educators in three types of peace, amidst them, one strongly related to the spiritual dimension. Additionally, forgiveness was identified as the most relevant value for peace, and respect for students as the most meaningful for peace education.

What is the meaning of peace? How can it be achieved? What values predominate in discourse about peace? How is faith and spirituality related to peace? These are several of the questions implicit in this research, and such reflection will allow us to know more about the nature of and the roadmap for peace education.
