In this article we present an experience of intercultural education with Mayan children from Yucatan, Mexico. We implement the intercultural intervention founded upon the theory of education and popular theater. We present the complex political and cultural context in which this experience happened, showing the differences between educators and learners as a starting point for the concrete experience of intercultural education. On this basis, we reflect on the difficulties of implementing the ideas of Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal in an environment that, beforehand, presents obstacles for democratic intercultural relations. To do this, we narrate some significant experiences that took place in a popular theater workshop from a self-critical and critical perspective. Finally, we suggest ideas for future interventions and theoretical and methodological reflections on education and popular theater in intercultural processes with indigenous children.
