Abstract

SEGURA-CARRILLO, Cristian; QUINTANILLA-CASTRO, Zandibell Alejandra; BARRIA-MENARES, Diego Gabriel  and  SEGUEL-MERINO, Daniela. Occupational experiences of people who during their childhood and/or adolescence were in residences of the ex-SENAME in Chile. Prospectiva [online]. 2023, n.36, e20312533.  Epub May 09, 2023. The experiences of institutionalized children are diverse, but there is little documentation regarding the post-exit experiences that have had people who spent their childhood in a State residence.

The aim of this paper is to analyze experiences in closed residences, from the perspective of men and women who have left residential care and are currently consolidating their professional and/or educational careers. We used the biographical method with a focus on the experience of being institutionalized and the post-institutional career. The main findings show that the institutionalization of children causes feelings of abandonment and pain during the process of family separation. Both positive and negative evaluations are observed during the stay in the institution. The process of leaving is usually solitary and unaccompanied by the institution. These people must live in an environment without support networks and carry a social stigma that causes a greater mental burden for each of them.

Keywords : Independence; Social vulnerability; Child institutionalization.
