Abstract

DE-ARRIBA, Raúl. Transformations in rural Europe and restrictions of the current rural development economic policies. Cuad. Desarro. Rural [online]. 2011, vol.8, n.66, pp.179-194. ISSN 0122-1450.

Currently the rural areas of Europe are undergoing a wide variety of profound changes. Given the diversity of rural spaces, a rural development approach centered on the specific needs of each zone requires differentiated rural development economic policy programms (RDEP). The simplification of the diagnosis of the rural income gap has lead to the RDEP relying excessively on promoting only economic growth, this having been ineffective on many occasions. To deepen our knowledge of these rural environments, it is important to identify the forms of integration that explain the reproduction strategies of rural societies, these being exchange, redistribution and reciprocity. This work proposes criteria for reconsidering the RDEP and explores the possibilities of extending its ambit beyond the encouragement of growth.

Keywords : rural development; economic policy; forms of integration; rural Europe; Income strategies; rural household; social capital; state labor market; rural public policies.
