Abstract

FORSTNER, Kathrin. Craftsmanship as a strategy for rural development: the case of the groups of craftswomen from the region of Puno (Peru). Cuad. Desarro. Rural [online]. 2013, vol.10, n.72, pp.141-158. ISSN 0122-1450.

This article explores the experiences of rural women who belong to a group of artisans in the region of Puno (Peru). Based on qualitative field research, we analyze both the economic and social effects of group work. The article discusses changes in the craft production and it examines craftsmanship as a source of income for women. It also presents groups as social spaces and it explores the leadership at this level. However, despite its benefits for women's individual development, group work may come into conflict with their domestic responsibilities. This study emphasizes the importance of analyzing craftsmanship as a strategy for rural development from a gender perspective.
