Abstract

CLAVIJO PONCE, Neidy Lorena. Culture and In Situ Preservation of Marginalized Andean Tubers in Boyacá Agroecosystems: An Analysis of Their Persistence from Prehispanic Times up to 2016. Cuad. Desarro. Rural [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.80, pp.52-70. ISSN 0122-1450.  https://doi.org/10.11144/javeriana.cdr14-80.ccst.

Based on a historical inquiry, complemented by the case study of two municipalities in the department of Boyacá, this study aims to identify several cultural elements related to three marginalized Andean species, namely Oxalis tuberosa (Molina), Tropaelum tuberosum (Ruíz & Pavón) and Ullucus tuberosus (Caldas), which arise from the prehispanic era and remain until the present day. According to this framework, the evidence shows a knowledge system that corresponds to the beliefs and valuations organized around these species. It is also well known that this scheme has remained constant over time, much like cultivation and exchange technologies and practices. These have been kept without major modifications since pre-Columbian times, despite the onslaught of the green revolution.

Keywords : preservation; Andean tubers; agroecosystems; Boyacá.
