Abstract

ALBAN, Raúl Ernesto; ARTEAGA, María Isabel  and  HERRERA, Francisco F.. Urban Agriculture in Caracas: Diagnosis of Agro-Productive Spaces from a Socio-Ecological Perspective. Cuad. Desarro. Rural [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.80, pp.71-89. ISSN 0122-1450.  https://doi.org/10.11144/javeriana.cdr14-80.aucd.

The increase in the urban population has caused difficulties regarding access to food, which has led to the emergence of the phenomenon of urban agriculture. In Caracas, this practice appeared through the generation of agricultural production units. The present study includes a multidimensional diagnosis that suggests relationships between economic, social, and ecological factors, outlined as determinant aspects of sovereignty and sustainability in thirteen units. Also, we identify several strengths of this structure among which are social organization, cultural diversity, and access to public policies. Meanwhile, its limitations focus on access to seeds and the low diversity of items and practices. In sum, the diagnosis presented represents a methodological contribution for the monitoring of urban agriculture units.

Keywords : urban agriculture; Caracas; networks; sovereignty; sustainability.
