Abstract

MAGANA MANCILLAS, Mario Alberto. William Walker and the Frontereños in Northern Baja California, 1853-1854. Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.1, pp.109-138. ISSN 0122-2066.

This article presents a different perspective to the study of William Walker filibustering expedition to northwest Mexico, centering on the impact it had on the regional society of northern Baja California, or known, then, as frontereña. This was heir to a late colonial culture focused on missions with his Indian and his soldiers. Thus, explains how the project actually filibuster on occupying Sonora, but political circumstances brought them to northern Baja California, especially because of its proximity to the port of San Diego. In this situation, the regional society was devastated by occupation and guerrilla resistance, encouraging a strong sense of identity, but at a very high cost in economic and demographic aspects.

Keywords : filibusters; ranchers; regional history; regional identity; frontier.
