This article studies the conditions of the establishment of Puerto Asis Col- ony (1912) as well as its indigenous orphanage (1914) from 1912 to 1920, linked to a project which regrouped indigenous groups in Bajo Putumayo –Siona and Cofán people- leaded by capuchin monks. The analysis of ecclesial and government docu- ments shows not only that the missionary activities were connected to government goals for occupying the territory in dispute with Perú, but also that new missionary strategies in compliance with the Convenio de Misiones, 1902. This research stated that, although the Puerto Asís Colony apparently was a failure due to the precarious- ness of the roads to Mocoa, missionaries, caucheros, and especially, indigenous made possible that the colony became alive.
