Abstract

PEREZ-PINZON, Luis Rubén. Historical representations about the origins of the urban population of Bucaramanga, Colombia (1922-2022). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.2, pp.79-104.  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 0122-2066.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v27n2-2022004.

The urban origins of Bucaramanga are polarized between a representation that since the 19th century promotes its current origin in 1778 by establishing itself as a parish, in contrast to the documentary chronicle that since 1914 defends its foundation when the Indians of the Río del Oro were congregated in a town and its shelter since 1622. This article aims to carry out a review of the causes of this historiographic polarization based on the contrast between the primary sources consulted by the nineteenth-century chroniclers and the continuity of the foundational discourse between the secondary sources consulted by the academics of the twentieth century. It is concluded that Otero D'Costa recognized an origin and institutional transition from the Indian people to the parish of white people, validated by regional professional historiography, but his readers misrepresented the proposed founding imaginary and still disclose that the city is the result of the congregational act carried out by a founding captain.
