Abstract

SOTOMAYOR-SANDOVAL, Susana Alejandra. Demographic fluctuations of an extravagant congregation in the capital of New Spain (1703-1753). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.2, pp.83-110.  Epub July 21, 2023. ISSN 0122-2066.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v28n2-2023004.

The preachers were assigned to the evangelization of the central-south zone, including the current territory of Oaxaca, constituting the province of San Hipólito mártir, dominating the languages of the region and favoring them before the disputes with Franciscans and Augustinians for the indoctrination of the Mixtecos and Zapotecos living in the novo-Hispanic capital, in jurisdiction of the disputing friars. Thus, the Dominicans were in charge of imparting the sacraments to this parish, canonically recognized as extravagant given the lack of a fixed seat within the novo-Hispanic capital, but they managed to congregate and erect their chapel under the Rosarian invocation. This article reconstructs the demographic profile of the extravagant using as main documentary corpus, the sacramental books of the chapel of the Rosary of the convent of Santo Domingo in Mexico with extreme dates of 1703-1753, which delimit the temporality of the study.

Keywords : mixtecos; zapotecos; extravagantes; Rosario; demographic profile..
